Gardens on a Grade

?

Shady hillside gardenNorth-facing slopes are friendly to plant life because roots stay cool and leaves are in the sun. A thick layer of wood chips turned quickly into soil-enriching compost to improve this once sandy bank. Rhododendrons love this exposure.

StepsSteps demand a slower pace and close attention, so why not reward your eye with a variety of alpines and miniature conifers such as in this garden we built at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum?

Steep slopesSteep slopes are hard to care for. But they can be tamed by building a series of knee walls, such as at this home in Apple Valley, which was then planted with cheerful sun-loving rock garden alpines. A slope in shade planted with ferns and hosta with a convenient bench can make a refreshing hideaway out of an often neglected space.
